Lync case study of a global manufacturer

This company operates in more than 100 countries, with many tens of thousands of IT users. After careful design and justification, Lync technology was deployed in a first phase to about 30,000 users. A further 20,000 users are now being brought onto the service completing the large scale, broad scope implementation and delivering the value identified at the outset.

Stage Challenge Outcome
  • The company had a number of competing technologies that were proving costly and over complicated to end users
  • Get the best possible commercial and technical options
  • A new global strategy was created which accepted that a single communication platform should become the primary system within the firm
  • Led the analysis of competing software technologies. The review clearly demonstrated Microsoft Lync’s value compared with alternative products.
  • Get capable partners
  • Migrate users without service breaks
  • A specialist Microsoft partner was selected and brought to the project to provide the technical implementation on a global basis.
  • Lync was introduced to the existing OCS platform without any downtime and Lync systems were built within Tier 1 data centers. Then users were migrated.
  • Monitor and encourage user adoption; deliver within budget and agreed timetable
  • Achieve efficient and effective steady state.
  • The migration and deployment approach was planned in conjunction with Microsoft best practice, with metrics defined for user registrations and overall usage. This was reported on a weekly basis with all metrics completed on time and to budget
  • The project team was initially responsible for the overall service of the Lync technology. Once the system was installed and in a steady state, the project team ran a second procurement to hand over service to a global provider.
  • Improve business practices using the capabilities of the technology
  • Using Lync as the corporate announcement system
  • Conducting training and interviews over Lync video.
  • Training sales teams on new products over Lync, previously teams would travel from all over the world.
  • Product developers using Lync video to communicate between Asia, North America and Europe.
  • Using Lync to communicate with external partners.
